OSSTF District 25 Political Action Committee
1272006_102115_0.gif?src=.PNG

The District Political Action Committee is a small but committed group that functions with the Teachers’ Bargaining Unit PAC as a joint committee. The Chair is elected at the first meeting of the year. Our responsibilities include responding to provincial political action initiatives; implementing political action as directed by either the Teacher BU Executive or the District Executive Council (DEC); and to consider and act upon programs initiated by the units. The Chair and representatives of the different bargaining units are responsible for reporting back to their respective executives, and teacher PAC reps. bring information back to the members in their branches and help to implement PAC initiatives at the branch level. Our local leadership does a great deal to establish and maintain relationships with various education stakeholders and community organizations. Those who sit on PAC try to support those efforts and also try to increase the positive public profile of Federation members and of the union itself.

Concrete examples of past PAC activities include active engagement in trustee and provincial election campaigns, organizing and hosting District 25’s annual “Meet and Greet” for the OCDSB community, and participation in the Labour Day parade and in the Bell Walk for Kids Help Phone.

The committee meets 6-7 times a year at the District Office, 67 Jamie Ave. Meetings begin at 4:30pm, and refreshments are provided.

Each bargaining unit is entitiled to a PAC representative selected by the bargaining unit, but anyone is welcome to join the committee. In the absence of an Unit PAC rep., information is forwarded from the committee to the Bargaining Unit President.

If you have an interest in politics and want more information, contact your Unit President or Dan Maxwell, the TBU/District PAC Chair through the District 25 office.

A Million Reasons to Raise the Minimum Wage Now!

Over one million people in Ontario earn less than $10 an hour, working in jobs where they are underpaid and undervalued.

If minimum wage had kept up with inflation, it would be $10 today. The single most effective step to improve incomes would be for the Ontario government to raise the minimum wage.

MPP Cheri DiNovo has put forward a $10 Minimum Wage Bill which has passed second reading in the Legislative Assembly. To send a message to the Premier and your MPP to support this bill or for more information about this campaign

Equal Pay Coalition
The Equal Pay Coalition lead the campaign which brought the Pay Equity Act to Ontario’s workplaces in 1988 and lobbied for its expansion in 1992 to cover predominantly female workplaces. As 2008 draws near, many employers are ignoring their obligation to pay women fairly. It is once again necessary to take action to ensure the promise of pay equity is kept. The Coalition has been revived (OSSTF is a member of the Coalition). Please take the time to sign the online petition by clicking the link.
